Hollywood icons celebrate friendship and mutual admiration
Veteran actor Sean Penn recently shared an interesting comment made by Julia Roberts’ husband, Danny Moder, about the actress, giving fans a glimpse into their long-standing friendship and respect for each other.
The two Hollywood stars came together in the 23rd season of Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors, engaging in a conversation about their work and long-standing friendship.
Penn’s early memory of meeting Roberts
While chatting, Penn went back to one of his earliest memories involving Roberts, recalling their first interaction in New York.
He remembered working on The Pope of Greenwich Village and hearing about the young newcomer.
Penn said he knew about her as Eric Roberts’ younger sister and assumed she was still in her teens at that time.
Roberts responded with a witty comeback, joking that she still feels like one.
Penn had teamed up with her brother, Eric Roberts, in the 1984 film, which is how Julia first came into his radar.
Penn talks about admiration for Julia and Danny Moder
In the conversation, Penn praised Roberts’ talent and also complimented her husband, cinematographer Danny Moder, calling him one of his favorites to work with.
Penn recalled how his mother admired Julia whenever she was around, and expressed appreciation for Moder’s work ethic and skill behind the camera.
Their mutual affection for Moder led Roberts to joke that they both have a shared “love” for him.
Penn further described hearing about Moder shooting a scene with complete focus, holding a camera in a corner, and someone referring to it as “the sexiest thing on earth.”
Roberts appreciates Penn’s acting brilliance
Roberts also had high praise for Penn’s talent.
The duo starred together in the 2022 Starz mini-series Gaslit, where they portrayed real-life couple Martha and John Mitchell.
In an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, Roberts said that watching Penn transform into John Mitchell with such dedication was exciting, calling him “one of the best actors in the business.”
